Does Total Wine Check IDs?

You have to be 21 years of age or older to purchase alcohol in the United States. And most liquor stores will not just take your word for it, they will require seeing a state identification card (such as a drivers license) to prove your age.

The best practice would be to just carry your drivers license with you when you go to the liquor store, but you might be wondering if you really need it. Or maybe you are on your way to the liquor store and have just realized you don’t have your ID with you, and are wondering if you need to go home to get it first.

I can tell you from experience that, yes, you will need your ID. Total Wine is very strict about checking for IDs. I have never had a time where Total Wine did not check for an ID.

Total Wine’s own website says they have a policy where they will check for ID from anyone that appears to be under the age of 30. However, in practice I think the cashiers at Total Wine just ask for IDs from everyone of any age.

Total Wine also has a policy where they will check for IDs from everyone in the group together. So if you go to the store with a friend or a spouse, at the checkout counter they will ask for IDs from both of you. This policy is a little less strictly enforced. I have been to Total Wine with my wife when they did not ask for my ID and only hers.

Does Total Wine scan IDs?

Many times when you are carded at a liquor store they will simply check the Date Of Birth on your drivers license to verify that you are at least 21 years old. But some stores go a step further and scan the barcode on the back of your drivers license to verify that it is legitimate. This step is intended to detect fake IDs.

Most of the time the cashiers at Total Wine do not scan the back of your ID, but rather just check the birthdate. I’m sure a liquor store chain as big as Total Wine has the capability to scan IDs when in doubt, but I cannot remember a time when they scanned my ID.

Generally it is a good idea to keep your drivers license with you to avoid being rejected when trying to buy alcohol. But I can assure you if you are buying beer, wine, or liquor at Total Wine you will definitely need your ID.
